Why I Volunteer: Voices from Our Community
Behind every box of food, every coat given, and every warm meal shared, there are real people—serving, giving, and receiving with grace and gratitude. At The Way Forward Initiative, we believe that serving others not only transforms lives—it transforms the ones who serve, too.
We asked members of our community—from volunteers to recipients to leadership—why they continue to show up, give, and believe in this mission. Their words say it best:
The Cook: “I pour love into every meal.”
– Margaret, Meal Prep Volunteer
“Cooking for people who are struggling isn’t about just feeding their stomachs—it’s about feeding their hearts. I always pray over the meals as I prepare them, asking God to let someone feel seen, valued, and loved. It’s an honor to be part of something that brings warmth into someone’s life, one plate at a time.”
The Organizer: “I want every item to feel like a gift.”
– Karen, Sorting & Packing Volunteer
“I take pride in how we pack the clothing, hygiene items, and food. It's not just stuff—it’s a message that says, you matter. I used to think volunteering was just about showing up. But now I see it’s about showing care. Even how a package is folded or labeled sends a message of dignity.”
The Driver: “Every delivery is a mission.”
– David, Delivery Driver
“When I drop off meals at churches or shelters, I’m not just driving—I’m delivering hope. Sometimes the person receiving it doesn’t say much, but you can see the relief in their eyes. That moment makes all the miles worth it.”
The Recipients: “I was in a dark place. They showed up.”
– James, Recipient of Food & Clothing Assistance
“I had just lost my job and was sleeping in my car. One day I showed up at a church that was hosting a distribution through The Way Forward. I left with food, warm clothes, a devotional book—and a little hope. They treated me with dignity, not pity. That meant everything.”
– Celina, Mother of Two & Program Recipient
“Last Christmas, I didn’t know how I was going to give my kids anything. But through The Way Forward, we received toys, warm jackets, and even food for the week. My kids were smiling again. I cried the whole ride home. I still don’t know who gave, but I’ll be forever grateful.”
The Founder: “This is my calling.”
– Sandy Ishmail, Founder & CEO
“I started this organization because I believe no one should be forgotten—especially in their lowest moments. I've been radically changed by God’s grace, and I knew I couldn’t keep that to myself. The Way Forward isn’t just a nonprofit—it’s a movement of people who believe in second chances, restored dignity, and practical love. Every donation, every volunteer hour, every meal shared is part of something much bigger than us. This is the gospel in action.”
