Lipstick, Love & Dignity: Why Beauty Products Matter in Crisis

When people think of donating to a nonprofit, the usual items come to mind: canned goods, coats, or maybe a pair of shoes. And those are incredibly important. But at The Way Forward Initiative, we’ve learned something powerful—sometimes, the most overlooked items can make the deepest impact.

Recently, a woman came through one of our clothing and hygiene drives. She was quiet, holding back tears as she picked out what she needed. One of our volunteers handed her a small bag with shampoo, a toothbrush, makeup kit, and hair color. Her whole face lit up. She smiled—and said something we won’t forget:

“I haven’t worn lipstick in years. This makes me feel human again.”

Why Makeup Isn’t Shallow—It’s Healing

For many women, especially those rebuilding after crisis, something as simple as a swipe of mascara or lip gloss isn’t vanity—it’s restoration.
It’s the reminder that they’re more than their situation. That they deserve to look in the mirror and feel confident again. That beauty isn’t a luxury—it’s a piece of identity they had to put on hold.

We’ve seen it with survivors of domestic violence, single mothers starting over, and women transitioning out of homelessness. When you’ve lost everything, being able to feel beautiful is a small but powerful step toward believing in yourself again.

Where Compassion Meets Cosmetics

That’s why, alongside food, clothing, and home goods, we also distribute makeup, skincare, and personal care items. These items are often donated with love, packed with care, and given to those who need not only support—but a sense of self.

In the same bag as toothpaste and soap, you might find:

  • A compact mirror

  • Lip balm

  • Blush or foundation

  • A handwritten note that says, “You are loved”

Because at the end of the day, dignity is in the details.

You Can Help Us Bring That Kind of Love

Donating makeup may seem small—but we’ve seen it change someone’s day.
And sometimes, changing a day is the first step to changing a life.

If you’d like to support this part of our mission, here are a few ways to help:

  • Donate new or gently-used makeup and skincare items

  • Sponsor a hygiene & beauty kit for a woman in crisis

  • Give financially so we can purchase these essentials for future distributions

Love Comes in Many Forms

A warm coat says, “You’re protected.”
A meal says, “You’re remembered.”
And a little lipstick? It says, “You’re still you. And you’re still beautiful.”

At The Way Forward Initiative, we’re committed to meeting people’s needs in ways that go deeper than survival—we’re here to help them feel seen, valued, and loved.
